Michigan State Football is thinking about hiring Urban Meyer as their new head coach. But it’s not guaranteed to be a success. It might take a long time to know if it’s a good decision, and it could be a failure if they get it wrong.
Some big names are being talked about for the job, and one of them is Urban Meyer. He used to coach college football and is now a TV analyst. Some people like him, and some don’t. But I’m not so sure it’s a great idea.
Meyer has won a lot in the past, with national championships and conference titles. But there are some concerns. He hasn’t coached college football since 2018, and things have changed a lot since then. College players now have more freedom, and the head coach isn’t as powerful as in the NFL. Meyer’s brief time coaching the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL didn’t go well. There were problems with how he treated players, and some bad hiring decisions were made.
College football is becoming more like the NFL in many ways, and Meyer may need to adapt. He has said he supports players getting paid for their name and image, but he’s also criticized using it to attract recruits.
Meyer is known for having a small group of favorite players, and he treats them better than others. But in the current college football era, where players can easily leave, that might not work.
If Meyer does come to Michigan State, he’ll have to rebuild the team without the famous assistant coaches he had before. It’s not clear if he can attract the right coaching talent.
In my opinion, hiring Meyer is risky, and success is not guaranteed. There are many questions, and other coaching candidates might be safer choices. Plus, there are concerns about his health, behavior, and off-field problems.
If the school does hire Meyer, it means they are willing to overlook his problems for on-field success. But I’m not so sure he can still win like he used to. And if they want someone based on past success, why not bring back Mark Dantonio?
